High quality senior care and luxury living may be within your reach. Many families are not aware of the following financial methods and opportunities:
Long Term Care Insurance - In the past, such insurance covered skilled nursing facilities only. An increasing number of carriers now offer Long Term Care Insurance that includes Assisted Living. Plans may cover a specific monthly dollar amount, a certain number of years, or both. This can help seniors to finance a high level of care in an elegant environment.
Veterans Benefits - Residents or spouses of veterans who served during a qualifying war time could be eligible for a specific dollar amount that would supplement any income received while residing in Assisted Living. Information on this benefit is available through your local VA chapter. Some Assisted Living residences provide applications and assistance with the application process.
Homeowners or Automobile Insurance - Short term stays may be covered by these types of insurance. Some policies cover short stays when seniors have problems such as power outages, flooding, car accident recovery, and other crises.
Self Pay - Assisted Living facilities consider all monthly income, including Social Security, pensions, interest from annuities, dividends from stocks and bonds, or any other revenue. Savings and total assets are considered, but many not need to be used.

Senior Living & Care Resources at Heather Heights of Pittsford, Rochester NY Area
I have always believed that part of my role as an assisted living administrator is to help families find the most appropriate living situation for their loved ones, even if that situation is with a competitor. Our team philosophy is to provide decision-making assistance to seniors and their families, whether that benefits us or not.
If I understand that a candidate has a preference for something more independent, I refer the family to an independent living facility. I just had this happen recently. I toured a daughter who loved us, but she really wanted to give independent living a go. I will keep her on our mailing list and invite her mom to our monthly events and keep them all in the loop. I will also stop in and visit her every once in a while at the independent living facility. We believe in maintaining relationships with anyone in our community who can benefit from our assistance.
I had a situation in the past where a candidate and his family were very interested in Heather Heights. After a physical assessment, however, we found that he needed a little more assistance than we could safely provide. We informed the family and then offered to assist them in their search for a very good nursing home. Both the family and candidate were very grateful of our efforts.
Another example that comes to mind is a woman who was struggling with the idea of bringing her mom to live with her. Although the daughter felt that we would give her mother excellent care, she finally decided to try caring for her mom at home. I provided her with options for home health aides and also referred her to our Ombudsman. She was extremely appreciative of my effort to assist her and her family.
